Curious about using Thunderbolt

I have a new iMac M3 operating on Sonoma 14.1. It is becoming time for me to set up a system for adding printers and other peripherals. I have received good advice regarding adaptor cables that will transfer from USB1 to USB3. I had not previously heard of Thunderbolt. What is it? Is it merely a different kind of USB3? What are its virtues? Why do some people prefer it? kathleen

you can read about it here Thunderbolt vs. USB-C: Everything You Need to Know (makeuseof.com)

it's main virtues is it works as monitor connector several to one port and it's faster than usb

but like with all interfaces the speed is like the speed you are allowed to driver on the road but it does not mean your external storage or printer or the likes can keep up
