I allowed the ios 17 upgrade to install yesterday. (Sat, 18 Nov 2023)

Now, the internet runs very slowly if at all unless I use my VPN. The problem did not exist the day before yesterday so throttling is not the issue (especially since connections to my ISP are also slow.) Actually, I have not been able to connect with any website without using VPN. I have tried several different websites including Google, Microsoft and my ISP. They may eventually connect but I don’t have the patience or the time to wait more than 5 minutes for a simple webpage to load.

The connection is fast with VPN enabled so the problem is not with the router, I connect with or without VPN through the same router. This problem occurs on both my iPad 3 and my iPhone 14 pro.

Clearly, this is a problem with iOS 17. Does anyone know of a fix for this?

After ANY iOS/iPadOS upgrade/update, you should ALWAYS perform a simple hard reset/forced restart of your Apple mobile device.

For iPad models with a Home button, do a simple hard reset/forced restart of your iPad by holding down both the Home and sleep/wake/power button simultaneously until your iPad goes to black and restarts with Apple logo, then release the buttons.

OR

For much newer design iPad models, without a Home button, try the new simple hard reset/forced restart procedure for the new 2018-2022 iPad Pros, 2020/21 iPad Air 4 and 5, the 2021 iPad Mini 6 and the new 2022, 10th gen base models,

1. Press and release the volume button closest to the top Power button

2. Then immediately ( and quickly ) press and release the volume button farthest from the top Power button.

3. Then, press and hold the top single sleep/wake/power button You will see the Slide to Power off button, but keep on holding down the power button until you see the Apple logo, then let it go.

Once you have performed all the steps, wait for a few seconds and your 2018-2022 iPad will boot up completely to the iPad’s Lock screen.

VPN and Security Apps are notorious for causing issues.

If you have a VPN App or profiles installed, or a security App such as Norton, these may be interfering with the iPad/iPhone's internal routing tables. The resolution is usually simple; if installed, you may only need to temporarily disable and/or remove the Security App and/or VPN.

After removing the offending items, reset your device's Network Settings:

Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad | iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings

The Network Reset will cause your device to reboot.

After restart, rejoin your WiFi network and test network connectivity. If all is well, you can reinstall your VPN/Security Apps.

Yes, I updated because it automatically kept sending messages on my phone for the recent update that happened on November 30th, 2023. Now I can't cast project anything on my smart TV when using my VPN on my phone, and now I regret updating. I would rather unwind the update. I can't browse the Internet when my VPN's on, so this last update sucks. Apple and I already did all the steps your community and help post have tried. Nothing's worked, so this last update is not very conducive.
