Reseting An Old eMac?

Hi, could anybody direct me to any advice on how to reset an old eMac? Not that I know how to do it on a new Mac either! I found this page but wasn’t sure if the steps in step 6 would work on this old machine!

What to do before you sell, give away, trade in, or recycle your Mac - Apple Support

This is an old eMac with a CD drive and the OS comes on a CD which I’ve still got. I’ve kept it for years but don’t actually need it so now I want to throw it away or give it away.

I’ve deleted all my files, and software I’ve installed that is not part of the OS and deleted all the recent history in all the apps that are part of the OS. However, every time I think I’ve wiped everything I find more personal details. First my bookmarks were still there in Safari, now I’ve deleted them, but now my email address is still set up in the Mail app! I would like to reset it completely so all my personal details are gone!

Thanks for any help,

Gareth

If the C key does not work, start your Mac with that disc already loaded in the optical drive, and hold an Option key while starting the Mac. A "startup device chooser" screen will appear with a choice of icons. Use the eMac's keyboard cursor left / right keys to choose the optical disc and press Return.

The easy way it to boot from that disc and choose Disk Utility at the Mac OS X Utilities menu. Erase the internal startup disk. That takes only a minute or so.

You can choose one of the "Secure erase" options but they will take a very, very long time (weeks, perhaps) and don't really convey much more in the way of actually erasing everything to the point data recovery becomes a literal impossibility.

To boot from the CD-ROM disc, press and hold a C key while starting the Mac. Release that key when the optical drive starts making noise.

Thanks John, this didn't work but I'm not sure if I did it right! I started holding down the C key immediately after pressing the power on button. Maybe I should start holding it before I press the on button? I couldn't really tell when the optical drive starts making noise. The machine makes a lot of different noises when it's coming on and I don't know what the optical drive is or what it sounds like. Should I just hold down the C key on start up until something happens? Thanks again for your help.

That method did work but when it gets to the “select destination” section it says “you can not install Mac OS X on this volume without changing your install settings. Click “options” to to change settings. A newer version of Mac OS X is installed”

So I have selected “Erase and Install” in the options. I’ve stared to install but it’s doing it very slowly! I’ll let you know how it goes! Thanks!
