Monterey newsd process downloading huge amounts of data

I found posts about this happening on Big Sur, Monterey, and Ventura, but the issue started happening to me on Monterey as well to the tune of 150 GB per day. In my case, the published work-around of unchecking iCloud news sync did not work. The newsd process kept downloading data until I force-quit (normal quit from Activity Monitor was ignored). The newsd process keeps restarting and downloading huge amounts of data requiring addition force-quits. I had to turn off my Mac Pro (late 2013) after exceeding my 1.25 TB cap and several 50 GB extensions. How can I stop this behavior?

The workaround of disabling iCloud News sync (unchecking System Preferences > iCloud > News) appears to be working for me. Perhaps I needed to logout or reboot after disabling News iCloud sync. I still see the newsd process in Activity Monitor, but it downloads only a small amount of data.

Right after posting “mission accomplished”, the newsd process returned and chewed through 10GB before I force-quit. Frustrating.
