Botim- new contacts without the app advice?

Do contacts on my iPhone have to have the Botim app to receive calls and messages? I've tried to add a contact, using the plus + sign at the top right, but they don't have Botim and they are not appearing when I try to find their name in the search box? Any advice greatly appreciated. Thanks :)
