When did Preferences become Settings?

It's only in the last few days I have realised that we no longer have Preferences.

When did they change to Settings?

I notice that when you launch FCP, holding down Option and Command it still asks whether you want to Delete the Preferences!

I believe with the release of Ventura. I suppose it's possible that FCP was somehow behind but, it's been consistent in every Apple application I've used since then.

The change was introduced by Ventura. All applications using the standard API automatically showed Settings instead of Preferences.

I have just checked: the same 10.6.5 version in my wife’s mac running Big Sur says Preferences and on my mac running Sonoma it says Settings.

The Delete Preferences window is coded for FCP specifically and thus will only say Settings if the code of the application is changed. I am curious what that window will say in the upcoming 10.7 version.
