The com.apple.Safari.History process completely saturates memory and the processor with Safari 17.1 under macOS Ventura 13.6.1 (22G313)
Since the last 2 security updates of October 2023 for macOS Ventura & Safari, the com.apple.Safari.History process has totally saturated memory at 100%, as well as the processor with a file that yo-yo's between 10GB and over 100GB!
This problem stems from the iCloud synchronization process for Safari. If this is deactivated, the problem disappears. It can also be exited in the Activity Monitor. But this is temporary and not viable.
So it's clearly identified. The only problem is that Apple's help only offers one solution - and it's always the same, whatever the problem - reinstall macOS or upgrade to the current version, macOS Sonoma (with no guarantee that this will solve the problem).
This process no longer works:
1. Purge Safari history and caches
2. Reboot the Mac
Here are all the operations already carried out to try and solve this problem:
- Booting into a clean, neutral session: same problem
- Booting into Safe Mode: identical problem, but with the added bonus that Safari always quits no matter what you do!
- Reinstalling macOS Ventura did not solve the problem, but I did it twice in one week!
- Complete iCloud deactivation and reactivation: identical problem
- Safari extensions removal: same problem
- Clean and complete removal with Find Any File from AdGuard: identical problem
- Clean and complete removal with Find Any File from CleanMyMac: identical problem
- Safari and iCloud preferences deletion: identical problem
- Deletion of entire User/Library/Safari folder: identical problem
