Epson V39 Scanner not detected on MacBook

I have tried 2 different Epson scanners (V19 and V39), which connect directly through my Mac. Mac doesn't see either scanner and scanner doesn't light up upon hookup. I have a 4 Thunderbolt Mac running Ventura 13.4.1

A couple of points. Keep your current operating system up to date (currently 13.6.1) and visit the Epson site to check for current drivers for this scanner.

Epson released scanner drivers and Scan 2 Utility 6.6.45 on Oct 1, 2023 for the V39 for macOS Ventura. I suggest you download/install that and reboot your Mac. Try the V39 again with the Epson utility.

The optional, paid VueScan Professional appears to support this scanner only with what it considers OS X 10.6 drivers through macOS Sierra, you if you feel lucky, you might try the free trial to see if it works.

I recently purchased the Canon LiDE 400 scanner ($89) and it is directly supported by Apple's AirPrint via USB-C connection. That means vendor independence as no Canon drivers or software are necessary. I use it with VueScan Professional.

I overlooked the fact that at macOS 13.4.1, that Software Update would offer you macOS 14.1. Near the bottom of that Software Update panel, there was a blue link to Other… which would have been just the update to 13.6.1.

The link to the Epson driver and Scan Utility that I provided was for macOS 13, but coincidentally it is the same driver and Scan Utility used for macOS 14.1. Install that downloaded Epson driver and software (it will be in your Downloads folder). Once you have done that, see if the Epson Scan Utility 2 application can identify your V39 scanner and permit scans.
