The brightness key on my MBP is locked -

the brightness Icon comes up with a lock below it and won't change the brightness. The display is not hot. In the system settings> display panel, the slider for display brightness is also locked.

I can't lower or increase the brightness

That was it! I had turned on HDR display, to play with the new Lightroom functions, and that had frozen the ability to change brightness. When I went to Apple XDR display (P3-1600 nits), it fixed the problem


What is the difference between the two choices: P3-1600 nits and P3-500 nits?

If you haven't already, try restarting your MacBook Pro. This is a simple step that can often resolve issues of an unknown origin: Shut down or restart your Mac - Apple Support


If brightness is still locked after a restart, check your display settings again. Some custom presets can affect changes to Brightness, True Tone and Night Shift: Use reference modes with your Apple display - Apple Support
