prior to ios 17.01 update my auto join network slider worked automatically with my home network. Since the update that switch is permanently greyed out and now I’m forced to constantly rejoin my home network manually each time I move away from it’s connection or restart my iphone xr. The button will no longer slide to allow me to auto join.

As for the change after the update...
Report this to Apple...
Update issues are commonly-reported issues on these forums. Question is: "Just how many people have actually reported this to Apple?"
So, do your Part: Provide Apple with feedback on this, letting them know about this issue. Apple may not get back to you directly, but the more feedback they receive on this, the more they will know what is occurring, and what bug fixes to include in updates to come. Apple will know nothing of this, if you don't report it to them.

The Auto-Join toggle is visibly different than the other toggles that are in off position, such as Low Data Mode. It's a bit more white than the others.
The button no longer slides to green. Also I do not have a reset settings option. It wants to set up to transfer everything to a new iphone. The update messed the auto join button up to where it simply is frozen in off position.
Your phone will be on lockdown mode you just need to turn it off you can search up how to easy peezy
