iPhone 14 Pro Max Lagging while opening, switching to home and to other apps.

I have an iPhone 13 Pro Max, and I recently bought an iPhone 15 Pro Max for my wife. As a result, I received her old iPhone 14 Pro Max, which I reset. Afterward, I transferred all the data from my iPhone 13 Pro Max to the iPhone 14 Pro Max. However, there was a slight hiccup because the iPhone 14 Pro Max was running iOS 16, while my 13 Pro Max was on iOS 17. To proceed, I had to update the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

My first attempt at updating during the data transfer process didn't go smoothly. The phone remained on the update screen for two hours without any progress. Consequently, I decided to configure it as a new iPhone, update it separately, reset it again, and then initiate the transfer process once more.

After successfully updating the iPhone 14 Pro Max and transferring all the data, I noticed a significant decrease in performance compared to my 13 Pro Max. The 14 Pro Max experienced screen freezing and lagging when opening and switching between apps. I tried restarting it multiple times and even performed a force restart, but the issues persisted.

Interestingly, my FaceTime also exhibited severe lag on the iPhone 14 Pro Max, while my iPhone 13 Pro Max, with the same data, continued to run smoothly. It's worth noting that the iPhone 14 Pro Max has a larger storage capacity (256GB) compared to the 128GB of my iPhone 13 Pro Max.

What steps can I take to resolve this lag issue and improve the performance of my iPhone 14 Pro Max?

I was also experiencing lagging when opening and switching between apps (particularly when using the app switcher, which was choppy and not working as usual) after updating my 14 Pro to 16.7.1. Also animations, like rain, weren´t showing in the weather app. I always have "Reduce Motion" turned off, and for some reason the update had turned it back on! Turning it OFF again solved the issues for me: go to Settings > Accessibility > Motion. Turn OFF the first item, "Reduce Motion", if it´s turned on! Hope this helps you!

Thanks for your reply! Unfortunately or not, in my case, I’m not having a performance issue; it is actually an animation issue that lags while switching apps to the home screen. Somehow, I’ve managed to find a way to avoid this bug. So, when I customize my background to blur, the issue simply vanishes.

Hi Ian,

Thank you! I have checked and my phone is already with Reduce Motion option turned off. The only ‘solution’ that I found was to customize my background to blur.

@mvegas21 — Do you have any solutions for the exact issue mentioned in OP’s question? The link provided is what every single iPhone user tries when the device has issues. This is a deeper problem (which started right when the iPhone 15 was released) and requires some actual thought and effort to solve.

It appears that Apple addressed this issue in the two most recent updates. Therefore, updating my iPhone 14 Pro Max to the latest iOS version resolved the problem! I'm hopeful it will work for you too.

Hi, thanks for this advice. I have this exact problem and none of the fixes solves it. The problem is really terrible, and I even got a new IPhone 14 Pro Max, and after 1-2 weeks the issue came back.

how do you set the background to blur? Never did this before…thanks very much!

That's the same version where I experienced lag on my iPhone. You might want to update to 17.1.1, as it appears they've resolved this issue in the version following yours.
