iPhone volume drops and raises on its own - attention aware features is off

I’ve experienced this both on my iPhone 14 Pro Max and my iPhone 15 Pro Max, so I am guessing it’s not a hardware issue.

I will be watching a video in any app and the volume will suddenly drop significantly. A while later it will raise back up. When it happens, I am not necessarily interacting with the phone. It might be just sitting there playing. I believe it also happens when just playing audio, but I haven’t noticed as much.

This happens both when I am playing the sound through the speakers and the headphones, another reason to think it’s software vs hardware.

I’ve tried the usual suspects: attention aware features, restart, hard restart. No impact. I have had multiple cases during this time, all with MagSafe “extensions” on them. Not sure if it could be a factor, but thought I’d mention it.

Any ideas outside the daunting prospect of rebuilding from scratch?

Thanks!

Unfortunately, none of those settings were enabled, so I’m thinking it must be something else.

Hello leojhartiv,

You're right! This may potentially be expected behavior depending on your settings. Check out the information on this page: Customize headphone audio levels on your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support. It provides information on how you can use Adaptive Audio to automatically adjust noise-control settings based on your surroundings.

You can also review the information on this page to learn how to adjust your iPhone's audio settings: Adjust audio settings on iPhone - Apple Support.

We hope this information helps you out.

Kind regards!

Hello leojhartiv,

Thank you for posting in Apple Support Communities.

It is possible the content is too loud and is being turned down automatically by the phone. Based on which region you are in, you may not be able to turn off this feature. You can learn more about that here: Headphone notifications on your iPhone, iPod touch, or Apple Watch - Apple Support

Kindest regards.
