Square photos are saving as rectangles on iCloud

Suddenly this week when I set my phone to take square pictures they look square on my phone but when they sync to iCloud and I open them on my computer they are rectangular. When my wife opens them on her computer the same thing happens. It's like the camera is capturing everything the lens sees beyond the edges of the crop box regardless of the settings. I'm taking pictures that are supposed to fit in a square window on a web page, so it's a pain in the butt that I have to crop them when I already took them as squares. Up until now this hasn't been a problem and I have no idea what changed.

Hey Ezra Z,

Have you checked to make sure that your device is updated to the latest software? Here's how you can check:

Update your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

Update your iPhone or iPad wirelessly

1. Back up your device using iCloud or your computer.
2. Plug your device into power and connect to the internet with Wi-Fi.
3. Go to Settings > General, then tap Software Update.
4. If you see more than one software update option available, choose the one that you want to install.
5. Tap Install Now. If you see Download and Install instead, tap it to download the update, enter your passcode, then tap Install Now. If you don't know your passcode, learn what to do.

We hope this helps!

Best regards.

Thanks for your response. I followed your advice and updated the software on my phone, then I took some more pictures. In my iCloud Photos the pictures look square, but when I download them they are rectangular.

I tried different ways of downloading them. It gave me the option of saving them as the "Unmodified Originals" but they were still rectangular. I tried "Most Compatible" and "Highest Resolution" but they were still rectangular.

I tried sending myself an iCloud link. When I followed the link and downloaded the files they were actually square! But, the names of some of the files changed to "FullSizeRender" which completely screwed up the order of the photos so I couldn't tell which ones went together.

The only advice I can find about getting rid of the FullSizeRender names is to make sure there are no filters on the photos. All of the photos were taken in one sitting without changing any settings. I have no idea why some would be different from the others. Any ideas?
