Contacts app broken after upgrade to iOS 17

I upgraded my iPhone 11 from iOS 16 to iOS 17 on Thursday, and afterwards the Contacts app has been fully inoperable. This includes

  • Loading contacts — opening a contact showed an empty contact with only the person's name
  • Adding contacts — no visible change after pressing done
  • Syncing contacts — no visible changes
  • Editing my card — crashes the app upon attempting to save

In the attempt to fix this, I have done the following, to no avail:

  • Restarted my phone
  • Disconnected/reconnected the various services that I sync my contacts to

Any suggestions on what to do?

Hi librarianmage

Were You able to find a resolution to this issue. I am running into the exact same problem after an upgrade to iOS 17 last night. I can’t sync contacts from iCloud or even add a new contact. Have tried everything possible I feel now.

Hello librarianmage,

When you turned off Contacts for Accounts within Settings > Contacts > Accounts, did the behavior change at all?

Does changing your default account help? This could help isolate the issue further: Manage and delete contacts on your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

"If you set up multiple accounts in the Contacts app, you can choose a default account to add new contacts to:

  1. Go to Settings > Contacts > Default Account.
  2. Choose an account."

If you haven't yet, we recommend reaching out to Apple Support directly. They have tools available to investigate this issue further: Get Support

Take care.

I still have iOS 16.6.1 and Contacts features that once existed have disappeared. Traditionally I used a USB cable to connect my iPhone to my MacBook Pro and click the Sync button in the Finder window for the iPhone to bring Contacts on both devices up to date with each other.

When the same contact with slightly different data in it was found the two devices, the software would put up an alert asking which one to save, or give me the option to save both. Now, it no longer does that. In addition, Contacts that I originated on my MacBook Pro are now failing to show up on my iPhone.

yesterday, at the advice of an AppleCare support person, I turned iCloud off for contacts on both devices, plugged in my USB cable, ran a Sync, and ALL my contacts on my MacBook Pro disappeared! When I went into Time Machine on my MacBook Pro to search back to find a version of Contacts from a day or so ago, it only restored some but not all of them. Now I’m terrified that I’m about to lose all of them!

A friend of mine advises me to just start paying $1.00 a month to expand my iCloud storage, turn that back on and hope for the best. But I’ve never had to pay extra for iCloud before and I’m worried that that won’t fix the problem anyway!
