After updating to Sonoma, I can no longer edit JPG files in Preview

After Updating to Sonoma, I Can No Longer Edit JPG Files in Preview. I've tried all the obvious solutions such as checking permissions. Nothing works.

Hi wfergus42,

Thanks for providing us that update. Let's restart your Mac in safe mode. This is a step that can help clear some system caches that can help. Once your Mac is in safe mode, please restart it as normal and see if you can edit the files in Preview. If needed, here's how to restart your Mac in safe mode:

Start up your Mac with Apple silicon in safe mode
1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > Shut Down.
2. Wait for your Mac to shut down completely. A Mac is completely shut down when the screen is black and any lights (including in the Touch Bar) are off.
3. Press and hold the power button on your Mac until “Loading startup options” appears.
4. Select a volume.
5. Press and hold the Shift key, then click Continue in Safe Mode.
6. The computer restarts automatically. When the login window appears, you should see “Safe Boot” in the menu bar.

These steps are outlined in this article if you need to reference them: Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support

We look forward to hearing back from you with an update.

Kind regards.

Uh, the whole issue I'm having is that Preview can no longer crop, cut or save changes to jpg files after updating to Sonoma. Some jpg files can be edited. Some can't. I opened these very same files on my older iMac and could edit the jpg files normally. Please note that I am using an M1 iMac. All updates are installed and all, for my identity, sharing and permissions on the files are set to "Read & Write." Sharing and permissions for Everyone are set to No Access. This setting can not be changed.

It's some sort of bug that was just introduced. Hopefully, there is a fix for it and I don't have to wait for an update.

Similar issue - files on a shared drive, preview will open jpg files on the mini & iPad without problem. On my 2 mbpro with apple chip some, very few will open. If I drag the file to the local desktop it will open. If I change the file name on the shared drive to jpeg it will open on the mbpro from the shared drive. Safari on the mbpro will open jpg on the shared drive without problems.

I also have this issue. When I edit a JPEG file, it can not be saved. I have tried both Preview and GIMP, and both will not let me save an edited image. Some images are fine, but others just won't save once edited. As with the original poster, I have checked permissions.

I also tried booting into Safe mode, as suggested below. That did not resolve the issue.
