Is there an option to stop the main camera going into 5x digital zoom whenever I press 5x optical camera on the 15pro max? It’s a bit annoying and takes time until the actual 5x optical camera takes over. In dark situations this can get extremely frustrating. I hope someone can help with a solution
From my quick test I think you have identified the problem - dark conditions. The telephoto camera has a smaller maximum aperture, so it is less capable in low light conditions. The Camera app shifts automatically to the standard camera with better light gathering capability.
It would be nice to have a manual setting added toallow skilled users to block this change. Wishlist requests can be posted at Feedback - iPhone - Apple

indeed it’s very difficult to engage the 5x optical in dark situations. But when it does it’s significantly better quality. It is definitely a feature or logic that should be improved. I will make sure to submit that request (thank you for providing the link).
As per my testing, digital zooming is garbage in comparison at 5x crop even in a pretty dark situations, I am not sure what is the use case for it
