Tips app consume hours of screen time on my Mac

In screen time, it says the tips app is always open and I've even checked the system monitor and it says it's not open. This started when I installed MacOS Sonoma 14.0

This issue has been on my nerves for a while. I tried to solve it finally today. Here is what I did

  1. Kill the Tips app and tips daemon manually. Open Terminal and type
sudo killall Tips tipsd

2.Start an automation to kill the app whenever the computer restarts or you re-login

Here are the steps to create the automation

  • Start Automator app
  • Select Application
  • Click Show library in the toolbar (if hidden)
  • Add Run shell script (from the Actions/Utilities)
killall tipsd Tips 2>/dev/null

  • Copy & paste your script into the window
  • Test it
  • Save somewhere (for example you can make an Applications folder in your HOME, you will get an your_name.app)
  • Go to System Preferences -> Users & Groups -> Login items (or System Preferences -> Accounts -> Login items / depending of your MacOS version)
  • Add this app

This will make sure that the tipsd will never open unless you really want those tips :)

Hello Beeblaine,

Thank you for reaching out to Apple Support Communities, and we'll be happy to help in any way we can. We understand you're having issues with an app reporting that it is always open in Screen Time. Next, what we would recommend, is testing this issue in another user account. What we need to do, is log out of your current user. Log back in under another Standard or Administrator account and see if the same issue occurs there. This way we can tell if it is an issue with your user account, or if it is system wide:Add a user or group on Mac - Apple Support

We hope this helps.

Cheers!
