iMessage, location-sharing map style

I live out in the absolute sparse country and my partner and I share our location with each other in iMessage. However, since the update, the map view has changed to the incredibly sparse, like, 3-color version of the map.

I’ve always used the satellite version and that’s what both my apple and Google maps are set to, so I don’t know why the iMessage map is this way.

Essentially, that map style is useless to me being out in the country because it doesn’t recognize half the properties/streets of rural Ireland.

it really is just since the latest update (iOS 17 I think?) — any fix for this?

It’s bothering me too! I can’t seem to change the map style in messages, unfortunately. However, you can still see the satellite view if you open “Find My,” then “People.” If it’s not the right map, click on the little globe on the upper right and choose “satellite.” Hopefully that helps, and hopefully they fix it in iMessages!
