Homepod ambient sounds not working with sleep timer anymore

Since the latest homepod os update I found out that it is no longer possible to play ambient sounds and let them stop by setting a sleep timer.

when I ask Siri to play an ambient sound this works fine.

but when I ask to set a sleep timer for XX minutes I now get the message “this is only possible when i’m playing audio like music or podcasts”

this worked perfectly on homepod os 16

do I Maybe have to use a different command or is this indeed a bug?

i am using the dutch version of Siri so i use dutch commands

hope someone can help

Hi wilfredfromtilburg,

We do see that the HomePod User Guide does still show that you can "Set a sleep timer: Stop music, podcasts, and other audio after a certain amount of time. Say something like “Hey Siri, stop playing in 30 minutes.”

We'd advise to contact Apple Support, so they can look into this.

Get Support

Let them know the Siri response, and that this worked as expected with HomePod Software Version 16.

Thank you for reaching out in Apple Support Communities. We recommend to restart your HomePod and see if that helps with the ambient sound. This is a step that can help resolve unexpected behavior. If needed, here's how:

Restart HomePod or HomePod mini

1. Open the Home app on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

2. Tap or click HomePod, then tap or click the Settings button .

3. If you have two HomePod speakers set up as a stereo pair, select Restart HomePod. If your HomePod speaker is not set up as a stereo pair, select Reset HomePod, then select Restart HomePod.

Hello!

Thank you for the suggestions. I tried both restarting the homepod from the menu and also by unplugging it from the power but the issue remains the same.

starting ambient sounds works like a charm but when I want to stop it via a sleep timer I still get the same response.

This worked flawlessly on all versions up to homepod os 16 but not on 17 anymore

Any suggestions on what to try next or do I have to hope that a future update will fix this?

Hello!

So I looked up the Apple document as mentioned and made a comment on Siri not being able to set a sleep timer for ambient sounds.

Next step would have been to get in touch with Apple support to discuss the issue but then….

i tried one more time and out of the blue it works!
