auto updates states big sur is up to date and does not offer the option of upgrading to Sonoma...

Note that if you actually have a 2014 model that you purchased in early 2015, Big Sur is the end of the line. For upgrade purposes, what counts is the hardware model year ( > About This Mac), not the sales invoice date.
Sonoma requires one of these Macs.

If your MacBook Pro is a 13" Early 2015 or 15" Mid 2015 model, you can update it to macOS Monterey – but no higher.

No. A MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, Early 2015) can be upgraded as far as Big Sur – and no further.
Back up your data, check the application compatibility table, click here, and if your Mac model is recent enough, then on the download link for a higher OS.

My MBA has an option to upgrade but after downloading the prompt says "the package "%@" is missing or invalid" this prompt occur while installing sonoma. Please any help is so much appreciated
