I'm not personally familiar with Fx Factory Globe Trotter. From its website, it appears to be a program exclusively for Final Cut Pro. In any event, iMovie does not accept third party plug-ins.
You might be able to create your own animated map of sorts. Take a screen shot of one of the map templates in iMovie. Move it to your desktop. Open it in preview and do Tools/Annotate/Line. Place a red line on the map from your starting point to your first custom location. Save. Create a duplicate of what you just created. Then add the next segment from your last custom location to the next custom location. Repeat the process as necessary, making a duplicate after adding each segment. Put all of your duplicates in the time line in proper order. Then play the movie. As the playhead moves through each of the clips the preview display would show each segment as it is added.
So it would look like this:

Hi,
Yes, you can move the destination point.
You can type in a new city in the destination selection box.
Or, you can type in the GPS coordinates of any address at the top of the destination box, and give it a name in the box at the bottom of the destination box.
So, for example, if you type in the coordinates for El Paso, Texas (31.75505,-106.488234) the destination point will change to those coordinates, with the El Paso name that you have designated. Likewise, you can type in the coordinates for your home address, or any other address, and the destination point will change accordingly. It will either be displayed as "Custom Location" or by the name that you have designated, such as "My House".
You can obtain the GPS coordinates for any address at this website:

I have been unable to reduce visibility of the dot it drops at each intermediate point. I stumbled across the app Fx Factory Globe Trotter which looks like a great plug-in. I note it is not in Apple's App Store, and wondered if you know anything about the safety of it. Thanks. Frank
Super helpful !
I have downloaded the trial version, and it is a neat program, but the instructions are brief, and learning curve looks steep.
I will try the method you outline. You have been really helpful. Thanks
Frank
Also, the above link contains an interactive map that you can click on at any location and the GPS coordinates will be shown for that location.

Thanks. I found the GPS and used it to plot points in the ocean to mark ship route. I will need to experiment with transitions to smooth the curve and dots on the end.
Great. Looks like you are good to go.

Best of luck with your project.
