Apple watch SE notifications not showing up

I think this has been since the last update to both Apple Watch 10.0.1, and iphone 17.0.2: I get the notification sound on my apple watch, but there are no notifications on the screen, no red dot notification, and NOTHING in the notification center. Notifications are coming through on the phone, and I haven't changed any settings as far as notifications go. All was working well before last week, when all the updates started. I understand that when my phone is locked the watch will show the notifications. I've rechecked all apps and the settings are where they should be, allowing notifications. The only thing I haven't done is re-pair my watch to my phone, which I'm hesitant to do. Any idea what's going on?
