You are not the first to have reported this.

Troubleshooting an Overheating iPhone:

There are likely too many processes taking place. So, power off the phone, to let it cool, and then try clearing space. Have you recently filled you iPhone storage? Having low available storage can most certainly case overheating. process are likely taken up

Perform the following:

I. Cool Down the iPhone:

For a few hours, perform the following...

  • Power Off: the iPhone for a bit
  • Unplug: any Cables
  • Place it Atop: Laptop Cooler
  • Keep it in: an open space
  • Keep it Out of: direct sunlight

then...

2. Clear Space Using my User Tips:

See if you need to clear lots of space. System resources may be using up too much services, making it overheat. Internal storage cannot be upgraded. It is what it is. So, the maximum internal storage capacity never increases, even if you upgraded your iCloud plan. Learn More here: What's the Difference Between Device Storage and iCloud Storage? Apple Support

Are you actually getting an overheating alert where you can’t use it until it cools down? Or are you referring to the device feeling warmer than expected? Could be indexing or could have rouge apps that need to be updated (by you or by the developer). Returning it may be premature but if you’re truly concerned you could contact Apple directly for support to troubleshoot (or going to your local Apple Store for assistance). Take a look in settings under Battery and see what apps have high usage…identify if you have a lot with Background Activity

this is my first iPhone and I’m sick of all the problems. This phone was overheating bad from being at the pool in less than an hour. I had a dark screen with a message telling me my phone had to cool down. I am disabled and it wouldn’t work at all!! I had to take it to my car and turn on the AC. This is a first. My Androids never had an overheating issue and they did everything I needed done.

Get this Serviced:

Why risk a faulty device? If this is less than a year old, or if you have AppleCare with this, then see if Apple will service it for you. Given your location, Apple provides a one-year, out-of-the-box, limited-warranty on your products. So, set up a Genius Bar Appointment at your local Apple Store, and see if they will service it. If your have AppleCare with this, then time would go much further than a year.
