3.5mm Audio Pin for Rode Mic - can I connect it into the audio jack and use it as audio input?

When the mic is connected through the headphone jack it doesn't show up. Is this possible, if so how can I do this?

Alternatively, if this can't be done, would getting a 3.5mm jack to USB-C adapter work?

MacBook Air, macOS 13.5

The 3.5mm headphone jack on the MacBook Air is for audio output, not input. Inserting a microphone into this port will not work.
