What is the "iPhone Temporary Files.noindex" folder on my Macintosh?

My Macbook Pro (13" 2020) was running low on drive space so I ran Grand Perspective to take a look at what might be going on. I noticed a folder with 10 gigs in is called "iPhone Temporary Files.noindex". The contents are several dmg files (one 6 gb and one 3gb). All dated Jan 9, 2007, 9:41am. I think that was the moment Steve Jobs announced the iPhone.

I did update my iPhone to iOS 17, but that 8gb ipsw file is located in the iPhone Software Updates folder.

So… What is this folder? Why is it here? And can I delete it or will is, as a temporary file go away on it's own at some point?

Thank you.
