what cable do I need to connect a 2015 imac to a 2023 imac

I purchased a new imac and I am trying to transfer all of the data from my 2015 imac to the new one. I used the wifi method and it did a poor job and then told me to try again. I am now attempting to connect them with a thunder bolt connector. unfortunately the recommended cable that I bought thru Amazon will not work on the 2015 imac. Any assistance you can provide will be greatly appreciated, thank you

The 2015 iMacs have Thunderbolt 2 ports with Mini DisplayPort style connectors. So to make a Thunderbolt connection to a 2023 Mac, you would need an Apple Thunderbolt 3-to-2 adapter plus a Thunderbolt 1/2 cable.

This is the Thunderbolt cable I used to migrate from my 2016 MacBook Pro to my 2023 MacBook Air: Apple Thunderbolt Cable

My experience has been that connecting old Mac to new Mac for Migration Assistant is fastest via a Thunderbolt connection.

You've already found out that WiFi doesn't work very well.

Some here have used crossover ethernet cables, but Thunderbolt is much faster.

My experience has been that transferring via Thunderbolt is much faster than via Time Machine backup, too. (The speed gap closes if you're using a USB-C external drive, but it's still going to be slower than Thunderbolt).

Hope this helps.
