"Google requires completing authentication in your web browser" - authentication not working

Hi, starting earlier today I stopped being able to access a gmail account in the mail app on my MacBook Pro. When I click on it, it says that "google requires completing authentication in your web browser," and it has a button to open safari. When I click the button, it opens Chrome (my default browser), but there is no option available to sign into my account. I have tried manually opening safari, which does prompt me to sign into my account, but even after signing in there I still can't access my account. I've also manually signed in on chrome, but I still can't get in. I've tried turning my laptop on and off again but still no results. Does anyone know how to fix this? I'm running macOS Catalina version 10.15.7 if that helps. Thanks!

MacBook Pro 16″, macOS 10.15

If anyone is having the same issue, I managed to fix it by making safari my default browser and then going through the instructions from the popup again

Using a gmail App Password:

When setting up gmail in your Mail app, you need to create and use an app password. You would log in using that password, rather than your Gmail password. If you are already using one, then create a new one. Sometimes, major changes (i.e. update installation or software removals) are made on the Mac, and syncing becomes an issue (which is what an App Password is intended to fix). Go Here: Sign in with App Passwords - Google Account Help - Google

I was able to sign into the email on my phone but nothing has worked to sign in on my MacBook. Every time I sign in on Safari like the instructions say, the email remains blocked in the app.

Troubleshooting Adding an eMail Account:

A while bunch of other things to try. Report back if anything here does the trick…

A. Try Different Apps:

So, what’s the app you are using for the eMail address your Mac? See if using the Mail app, gmail app, or MS Outlook(if installed) works.

B. Who’s Device is this?:

If this is a company-owned device, then there may be some restrictions on it. If this is your own device, then try adding this

C. Disable a VPN:

Are you connected to a VPN? If so, disconnect from the VPN. Then, try adding it once more. VPNs are all about Security & Privacy, however when you use them, logging in to site becomes an issue due to suspicious activity.

D. Add while in Safe Mode:

(Hold Down: the shift key upon boot). In Safe Mode, login items do not load at log in, certain System Preferences are set aside, and damaged system files (caches) are fixed. Once logged in, try adding this account. Go Here: Start up your Mac in Safe Mode - Apple Support

E. Create a New Administrator User:

For troubleshooting purposes, create a new Administrator user, and see if you can successfully add the eMail account with that user. If so, then it is something misconfigured in your current user. If not, then is is an issue with the entire MacOS. You can then trash this Administrator user once all the troubleshooting is complete.

F. Try Another Network:

See if you can add this account to your Mac while connected a different WiFi network. You may just not have the permissions to add this, if a guest user. See if a friend or neighbor will let you use their network. Try adding this to your Mac while at work.

G. Restart your Router:

Power off your router for 30 seconds and then power it back on. Perhaps you need to get a new signal.

"Hi, I appreciate the answer, but the gmail account is a school account and so is not able to have an app password. I tried to follow the directions from the link but the option was not available for this reason."
