I need to use my iMac as secondary monitor

I currently own two Apple devices:

  1. iMac (2019) - 27-inch Retina 5K
  2. MacBook Pro (2021) - 14-inch with M1 Pro chip

I'm interested in using my iMac as a secondary monitor for my MacBook Pro. Could you please provide a step-by-step guide or direct me to the

iMac 27″

Target Display Mode went away when the first 27" Retina 5K iMac came out.

It would be nice if you could reuse that 27" 5K screen as a "hardware" monitor for another Mac or PC, but alas, things did not work out that way…

Not using Target Display Mode as mentioned in the article above your name. TDM had very restrictive hardware and OS requirements; your Macs are far too new to support TDM.

There are options like AirPlay to Mac and network screen sharing, but both are laggy.

Third-part options are out there, like Luna and Duet display, but may cost and much as a good external monitor. I'm leave it to others to address and lag and cost issues with those.
