iPad not recognising passcode, Mac not recognising iPad

My iPad recently stopped recognising the usual passcode. I haven't updated the software recently, so that isn't a possible cause. Also, the Lock Screen (showing the time and date) is partially faded, so presumably it is failing somehow? I am not sure if it has been dropped or taken any knocks recently.

I am attempting to restore it to factory settings - I have all the necessary backups - but my MacBook is not recognising it at all - it does not show up in finder or music app. However, the usb port is clearly working, as when I plug it in it does beep and start charging.

Any suggestions as to how I can restore it to factory settings, or does it need to be taken to a repair shop? Many thanks.

Given your description, attempting to perform factory restore while a hardware fault is suspected may result in a completely inoperable device.

In the circumstances, you might be best advised to seek assistance directly from the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) - where the technicians will be able to test and assess your iPad. If a fault is identified, as is perhaps very likely, you will be in the best possible place to explore your available options:

Genius Bar Reservation and Apple Support Options - Apple

Otherwise, you might consider seeking advice from the Apple Support Team - using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page. Alternatively, you can initiate and manage your support cases from Apple devices using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:
