Locked firmware

I received a MacBook air from 2015that is now firmware locked.. the previous owner removed himself from the MacBook altogether- Its been mine for almost two years now. The MacBook is inadvertently locked due to a firmware passcode. Can I find this passcode anywhere without going to the Apple Store?? Is there a series of startup instructions that I could use in order to remove the lock??
