I have an ipad mini. For the past several months i notice that emails i had sent are appearing in my inbox! These are emails that the recipient did not answer. I just spent almost an hour with Apple support and they claim ignorance of the problem. It only happens on my ipad mini, even though i can also access my email on my desktop. Has anyone found a solution specific to the mini?

Have you unintentionally enabled Always Bcc Myself in iPad settings? If you have enabled this feature, any email that you send will automatically send a copy to your own inbox:
Settings > Mail > [Composing] Always Bcc Myself - set to OFF
