Save a few. Rather tan upgrading your iCloud Plan, save a few and export certain files (i.e. long movies) to an external hard drive. Once exported, verify your can access the data. It looks like your best approach would be to purchase more space on iCloud+ then back up your iPhone to the iCloud. These are the backup methods that Apple allows. Backing up to an external hard drive is not allowed.
