This is generally a hardware issue. If the unit's on an OS version older than 16.6, you might be able to fix it by updating it from a computer or the Software Update function in Settings; otherwise, contact Apple Support.

Hello.
The main fix to this issue is to recalibrate your Face ID. To do that go to Srttings > Face ID & Passcode > Reset Face ID. You can make sure it is recognizing you no matter how you look by setting up Face ID to recognize an alternate appearance in the same Settings page. Another fix might be to set up Face ID with a mask in case you find Face ID not working when wearing a mask.
