How do I stop segments during a workout on Apple Watch?

Select the Workout Activity, such as "Outdoor Walk" NOTE: Do not start the walk, instead:

  1. Tap the 3 dots in the upper righthand corner
  2. Then, Tap the Pencil Icon
  3. Then, SCROLL down to "Splits"
  4. Tap "Splits"
  5. Where it says "Splits Alert' ensure you TURN OFF the alert by tapping the righthand "slide" to GRAY instead of GREEN.
  6. This should turn off your unwanted segments and splits notifications. The segments should be available once you stop your workout, should you want to access them.

Indeed, the Splits are active by default and engage with every rub of an outer garment. Cycling in a long jersey, for example, is awful.

With 11.4, Apple, in the current RIP "it just works" software nightmare(s), has buried how to turn off "Splits." The previous complicated way now has become ever more byzantine. (No one who actually works out would design this, I don't believe.)

Apple friends, see if this works for you:

Workouts > Three ellipses in upper right of a given workout > Hamburger menu to the right of "Suggested" > Custom > Preferences > Splits Alert and toggle this slider off.

To sum: Are you kidding, Apple? Six steps to turn off a nightmare feature that should be off by default, and turned on (if wanted) by some easy method?

I found that segments were being recorded constantly when using gym equipment.

on the iwatch ultra I discovered that the action button was configured to record segments when pressed during a workout on gym equipment.

this can be configured in your watch app settings. Lots of options but I set mine to off/do nothing.

hope this helps.

I tried that, segments is “turned off” on my watch. This morning when I ran in cold weather a sleeve must have brushed across the watch and segments started going off anyway, including three that said “0 meters, 0 seconds.” I had to guesstimate my time and distance because this went on for 10 minutes. Luckily it was the end of my run. A major flaw in the watch for runners (that and the fact that it is very difficult at times to stop your time at the end of a hot, sweaty run)

Very frustrating when I wear long sleeves. The 800 dollar Ultra 2 I own starts giving me random segment splits multiple times during a run. I only want mile splits.... not a split at .1 miles, then another at 1.13 miles, then another at 2.1 miles. The only thing that really works is to lock the screen by pressing the flat button (next to the dial), then pressing the water droplet to disable the screen. At the end of my run, I press and hold the dial button until the "water is dispelled", then I can access the screen to stop the workout. Obviously, Apple does not use real people to test their watches. If they send me a new one, I will gladly test it for free, and give feedback. You can do better, Apple.

Hi, I may have just found a workaround. I had the same problem, as you, and many others, and yesterday I probably got nine segment alerts in less than 50 feet of a run. Not sure if it works yet because I haven't used it in a real workout, but I remembered this ...

"Please for all that is holy give us the option to disable segments!," and couldn't agree more!

It's not perfect and I don't know if it will work if you're looking for exact times. I've tried it with Outdoor Walk and Outdoor Run, but not in a real workout, yet.

Go to Outdoor Walk or Run and open it.

Then hit the side button, not the crown dial. It takes you to the control screen.

Hit the water drop. It locks the screen.

To unlock the screen when you're done, hold the crown, and it will do that water ejection thing.

I won't know if it will give mile splits until tomorrow, I sure hope it does. My apologies if it doesn't work and I've wasted your time. I just remembered your post when I was trying to solve this yesterday after getting so many segment alerts that I wanted to slam my watch into the ground. It all happens because of my wet sleeve, it doesn't happen in the summertime.

Hope it helps, Tim

I tried these steps but the last one isn't available on my watch: You can disable segments and heart rate zones.

  1. On the watch access the workout. select the three dots (…)
  2. scroll to the bottom and tap the preferences
  3. tap the outdoor cycle workout views
  4. Scroll down and adjust to Not include segments and heart rate zones etc.

There is nothing that mentions "segments" when I get to this step

I assigned a shortcut to the orange action button. This way, when the button is pressed, it opens the shortcut which launches a menu, so if no menu item is selected, the shortcut just goes away and no segment alert is displayed.

To make things even tighter, I launch workouts from the menu in the shortcut that is assigned to the action button. The first menu item on that shortcut prompts to select a workout (e.g. Cross Training, Yoga, Run). The workout selection is followed by enabling water lock. This locks the dail and function buttons. This makes the phone unresponsive to any button or screen touch until the water lock is disabled.
