Mac with Software OS X 10.9.5 (13F1911)

I am using a Mac with Software OS X 10.9.5 (13F1911) and I cannot seem to update the software further. This is creating issues such as not being able to sign into I message or download certain apps

A MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013) can run anything from the version of Mavericks that came with it up to the most recent version of Big Sur. It cannot run Monterey or higher.

If you're still running Mavericks, chances are that you have many 32-bit applications. Catalina and Big Sur won't run those. Also, in Catalina and Big Sur, you'll find that iTunes is gone, replaced by separate apps.

What happened to iTunes? - Apple Support

You cannot upgrade RAM on that MBP. It is soldered in. You can get larger internal SSDs Your machine would have come with a 128 GB, 256 GB, or 512 GB. OWC sells internal SSDs for it that hold as much as 2 TB.

By default, the App Store hides all but the latest version of macOS. That latest version is Ventura - soon to be Sonoma – neither of which your MBP can run.

To get older versions of macOS, you need to go through an Apple support page. Here's the U.S. version of the Canadian page to which Johnb-one gave a link.

How to download and install macOS - Apple Support

If you have trouble getting to the App Store from Mavericks and its old version of Safari, you might need to do the upgrade in steps. I.e., download the Sierra installer (which is the form of a plain .DMG disk image), install Sierra, and then use Sierra's newer versions of Safari and the App Store to upgrade to the target OS.

Thanks cam_0

this link detailing the rough requirements for each version of MacOS might be helpful:

https://www.macworld.com/article/673697/what-version-of-macos-can-my-mac-run.html.. then verify the capabilities of your Mac by going to “About this Mac” under the Apple icon, top left of your screen, and it’ll tell you stuff, take a screenshot ( Apple+ shift+3 held down together or Apple+ Shift+ 4 ( you should hear a “camera click” if successful, ) then take that info to everymac.com which will tell you the specs and useful

info about pretty much every Mac made… then download the appropriate version of MacOS for your Mac from this link; you should use Safari for downloading this, as it links right to the App Store… other browsers may work, but you’ll have to point ‘em to the App Store… here’s the list of Mac OS ‘s
