A pop up keeps showing on my MacBook saying that my Mac is at risk.

Looks like I visited some fraudulent sites by mistake from where i exited without clicking on things that looked suspicious. But now a popup keeps appearing impersonating as my "system settings" popup, telling me that my computer is at risk. When I click on it it takes to the same website impersonating as a Mcafee website. I don't have Mcafee on my computer. How do I delete this popup?

Troubleshooting a Scam Message:

Indeed it is a scam --a phishing, in fact. Can you provide a screenshot of this message? Capture a portion of the screen, blanking out personal info, through use of the Photos app.

  1. Go here: Take a Screenshot on your Mac - Apple Support
  2. Scroll to: How to capture a portion of the screen
  3. Proceed form there as necessary.

Thank you for the screenshot.

A. Single-Out this User:

Create a new administrator user. Log into it, and see if you still get this message. If so, then it is an error with your current user. If not, then it is an error with you entire Mac.

B, View your App List:

Opening your app list, is there anything in there that would resemble a Security Software brand? If so, uninstall it. Contact the Developer of the app. Just Dragging & Dropping its icons to the trash will leave items laying about your Mac.

C. Scan with Malwarebytes for Mac:

Malwarebytes searches for malware (short for malicious software) and spyware. Malware makes your Mac behave in a mislead manor.  Malwarebytes is created by longtime users of these forums, making it the only reliable Security Software for a Mac. Remove what is found from the quarantine.

Downloads:

  1. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac
  2. Malwarebytes Uninstaller

D. Restore you Mac from a Backup:

Did you ever back up your Mac prior to all of this? If so export what need be onto an external drive, and then restore your Mac from the backup. If not, then take this as a learning experience, knowing to always backup your Mac, that way your can have something to restore your Mac from, should anything go wrong from here on out.

from it.
