Unable to initiate a photos cutout

Unable to do as follows. Tap and hold does NOT generate a shiny white outline.

" Separate the subject of your photo from the background and then share it

  1. Open a photo in the Photos app or in apps like Messages or Safari.
  2. Touch and hold the subject of the photo. A shiny white outline might appear. "

The feature can dig subjects out of photos taken without special depth sensors, so your old digitized photo should not be a problem, and your software is clearly new enough. Maybe the processor in your iPhone X is too old to support the feature. I don’t recall the cutoff.

Try on a few pictures with visually distinct subjects. Individual flowers can often be detected, as can people.
