I was in a local park and my iPhone 13 Pro says 5G in the upper right hand corner. But when I start an app that uses the internet I get the message "offline...". Is there a configuration that I am missing? Thanks in advance.

It might be a network problem, either an overloaded tower or an actual outage. Or you may be using VPN.
Try going to settings/Cellular/Cellular Data Options and change Voice & Data to 5G Auto, and if that doesn’t work, to LTE.

I upgraded my iPhone 15 Pro to iOS 17.5.1 yesterday. The same problem occurred this morning. No internet data access while using Google Maps when my phone was showing 4 bars and 5G on the Vodafone Australia network. I have seen similar no internet data messages in Waze and other apps. I switched mobile data off and on and this morning that fixed the problem. Normally this fix is temporary so I will monitor today.

If using Personal HotSpot, broadband can come into concern here. I remember this being a great issue in my area during the days of COVID. As Tucker Carlson put it: "There is only so much that broadband can handle."
