Can I reset my former employer's macbook?

I was laid off last year and I still have my former employer's MacBook. The entire department was laid off and no one was around to follow up about the laptop. There's literally no one at the company to send it to at this point. Can I reset it somehow to use it as my personal laptop?

Is it possible to do a factory reset?

You can try: What to do before you sell, give away, trade in, or recycle your Mac - Apple Support

If that Mac was never released from its remote management profile, that attempt won't be successful, but you will be no worse off than you are now.
