How Come the Homepod Doesn't Retain It's Play History?

I'm not sure if this is a common issue, but I have a HomePod Mini and a Gen1 HomePod. Neither does a good job at retaining the play history.

The HomePod is supposed to be able to pick up where it left off. Some of the time it does that, but most times it seems defaults to play my Apple Music Station. This seems to make it difficult in the seamless play throughout my home because I can't seem to connect to the HomePod from my phone or Apple device through the Home App to continue playing as well.

Hello Arthmyx,

Next we recommend following the steps here if HomePod isn't responding correctly: If HomePod or HomePod mini isn't responding - Apple Support

"Check for alerts in the Home app

If HomePod or HomePod mini can't connect to your home Wi-Fi network, can't access your Apple ID, or has another issue, you'll see an alert with details about the issue in the Home app. To see more information about the alert, open the Home app, then tap or click HomePod.

Check your Wi-Fi connection

HomePod and HomePod mini automatically connect to the same Wi-Fi network as your iPhone or iPad. To check your Wi-Fi signal strength:

  1. Open the Home app on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
  2. Tap or click HomePod.
  3. Scroll down, or tap or click the Settings icon  and scroll down to Wi-Fi Network. The Wi-Fi signal strength indicator  appears next to your network name.

If the signal strength indicator shows two bars or fewer , your Wi-Fi signal strength is weak. Try moving your HomePod speaker closer to your router and remove potential sources of wireless interference.

If the signal strength indicator shows an exclamation point learn what to do.

HomePod and HomePod mini support captive portal Wi-Fi networks that require additional sign-in steps, for example, those provided by hotels or dorms. Use your iPhone or iPad to connect to the network, then follow the onscreen instructions for setup.

The Wi-Fi signal strength indicator isn't supported on HomePod speakers connected to networks that block peer-to-peer traffic, like some captive networks.

Restart HomePod or HomePod mini

  1. Open the Home app on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac that's signed in with the Apple ID that you used to set up HomePod.
  2. Tap or click HomePod.
  3. Scroll down, or tap or click the Settings icon  and scroll down.
  4. If you have two HomePod speakers set up as a stereo pair, select Restart HomePod. If your HomePod speaker is not set up as a stereo pair, select Reset HomePod, then select Restart HomePod.

If you don't see an option to restart your HomePod, unplug it from power, then plug it back in and try again.

If HomePod still doesn't respond, reset it.

I attempted to troubleshoot with the information you gave me. That didn't do it, unfortunately. My Wi-Fi is fine. However, I did attempt a reset. When I used it on its own, the problem still happened.

This time around, I connected my HomePod and my office Apple TV 4K as a paired stereo, and it seems to have made it significantly better!

I have a HomePod and Apple TV 4K in the same room. I usually don't pair them because I have a sound bar for the TV. However, when I paired the HomePod with the Apple TV 4K, the performance is significantly better!

Hi Arthmyx,

We understand you're having trouble with playing music on your HomePod and we can help.

Your HomePod should always pickup where it was last playing when you tell it to press play or tap the top of the HomePod:

Use HomePod touch controls

Additionally, you don't control playback of the HomePod from the Home app, but instead from the Now Playing section of Control Center. You can often access this right from the Music app itself:

Play audio on HomePod using an iOS or iPadOS device

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities.

Hello,

Thank you for your response. However, the Homepod doesn't seem to really remember where it left off most of the time. Sometimes it remembers, and sometimes it shows up on my Now Playing section of Control Center...

Sometimes it doesn't. I'm having trouble with this because the issue causes both a delay in playing the music and for it to forget on one of the HomePods and completely overwrite my play history.

For example:

  • I'm playing a playlist, I pause and walk away, I come back and I either tap it or continue playing from my iPhone and it resets from the beginning of the playlist.
  • I use it to play a podcast, and it doesn't display on the control center that I'm playing a podcast. Instead, it assumes I'm playing music from another occasion.
  • If I play music directly from it using Siri, sometimes control center wont pick it up either.

It seems very inconsistent around play history and I'm not really sure where to start with troubleshooting it besides resetting or restarting it.
