How come my devices say they are not backed up. I thought it was automatic with paying the $2.99 a month I pay?

I gone in and told it to backup. It’s connected to Wi-Fi and I lock it and it still doesn’t backup?

iPhone SE, iOS 16

If you can't back up to iCloud - Apple Support
