Logic Pro X volume cuts randomly

This has happened multiple times on both stock logic instruments as well as third-party VSTs (Spitfire, Eastwest): I'll be playing (sometimes recording, sometimes not), and the volume on the track will cut out, either down to barely audible or out entirely. If I re-initialize the audio it fixes it, but it keeps happening every few minutes. From what I can tell it's not the MIDI controller, I've tried both keyboards I have and it's the same on both. Tried multiple cables.

The answer is most likely an update as I'm using Logic 10.6.3 on Catalina 10.15.7, but I'm currently out of space on my internal HD, so much so that a software update isn't currently possible.

Any help appreciated, thanks

I'm definitely cleaning out as much space as I can to see if I can just update.

This is the most important thing to do! Even maybe not really related to your issue.

Is having trial versions of plugins a common cause of this volume issue?

Sure, some plugins running in demo mode cut the volume, some produce noise after a certain time, others do nothing...

I've heard that uninstalling all plugins and re-installing is also a possible fix to this issue?

You need to find the culptit. Re-installing the "bad" plugin doesnt help....

• Boot Logic in Audio Units safe mode and see if the issue still persists.

Use startup modifier keys with Logic Pro for Mac - Apple Support

• Re-boot Logic again, de-activate and find the culprit with the help of the plugin-manager.

Edit:

Unplug all external midi/usb-controller, to rule out the possibility, you are using a defective controller, that sends weird cc messages.

Having trouble booting logic in Audio in Audio Units Safe Mode. I read the modifier keys page you linked and I'm able to get the launch / don't launch option by holding control as logic opens, but i've tried it several times with shift + control. "Press Shift-Control to open Logic Pro with only validated Audio Units plug-ins enabled."- maybe I'm interpreting this incorrectly?
