When I change Contact's Phone Label to Custom Label, it does not Save. Instead it reverts to default "phone" after I save my change. I am on iOS version 16.6, the latest version. My Contacts are set to sync with iCloud account.

Thanks for your reply. What you wrote, combined with what I learned while researching a question about saving an IPhone Pages File, points to the iCloud account as a possible cause for issues. I'm disabling iCloud links for some iPhone functions so that I have more control locally.
Edit the contact. I had something in the "link contacts" field. I deleted that and was able to save my custom label.
That's kind of a basic (i.e. dumb) reply. You must be a robot.
If you actually read what I wrote about the problem, you'd understand that I already know how to edit and save a contact my problem is with Contacts app software: it does not save my change.
I figured out one solution: delete the Contact that has the problem and enter it again as a new Contact. Then the Contact Custom Label is saved.
would help if Apple Engineers fix their software instead of guiding to solutions that have nothing to do with the reported issue.

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. We understand you are running into an issue with Contacts, and we're happy to help. When trying to edit Contacts be sure you're using the steps here:
In the Contacts app, assign a photo to a contact, add a pronunciation, change a label, add a birthday, and more.
1. Tap a contact, then tap Edit.
2. Enter or update their contact information.
3. When you’re finished, tap Done.

Had the same problem. It wouldn’t save on mine because I had linked that contact with an iCloud and exchange account. That’s probably why reading the account without linking would work

That worked! But I actually had to delete the outlook contact. I didn’t see an “unlink” option.
