MIDI aggregate device output problems

For years I have used the MIDI app in OSX to make an aggregate device that plays music from my Macbook Pro to headphone ouput (desktop speakers) and a Bluetooth receiver in another room hard-wired to speakers.

I have a new Macbook Pro and can't make this work anymore. The headphone output and Bluetooth output work fine separately, but when I make the aggregate device only the top device in the selected list plays. I can delete the top device and re-add it as a second device, and now it won't play but the formerly second device (now top) will play instead. I'm baffled.

This is with a 2023 14" MacBook Pro (Mac 14,9) with 16GB memoru, running Ventura 13.4.1.

an "aggregate device" is normally used to combine input sources. for your purpose, you need to make a "multi-output device" (in MIDI settings) to hear the audio from both devices at the same time.

well, I'm stumped. yes, everything looks correct. the only other thing I can think of, would be to Start up your Mac in safe mode. you won't be able to test your sound settings, as sound is disabled while in safe mode. but you can boot into safe mode and run the Mac for a few minutes, and then restart normally again. sometimes a safe boot followed by a regular boot resolves issues.

if no resolution, please let us know. someone else may have an idea.
