Ventura 13.5 logon with non Apple mouse/keyboard not working

I use a Logitech MX Anywhere 3 and Keychron keyboard on a 2020, 27" 5k iMac. Both are connected using Bluetooth. Both worked ok before Ventura 13.5 and continue to work ok with 13.5 but ONLY after logon.

After power-on and at the login screen only the Apple Magic Mouse and Magic Keyboard allow entry of a password via Bluetooth, even then, occasionally the Magic Keyboard doesn't connect/work. Connecting the Magic Keyboard using a USB cable always works, same for my Keychron keyboard. After logon, once the desktop is presented, the Logitech mouse, Keychron Keyboard plus the Apple mouse and keyboard work just as one would expect. i.e. ok.

I've tried removing all Bluetooth devices, deleting the /System/Preferences/com.apple.bluetooth.plist file, rebooting and pairing the Bluetooth devices again, but the problem persists.

It's really annoying having to connect the Apple mouse and keyboard just to logon and then put them aside and use my Logitech mouse and Keychron keyboard. Is anyone else seeing this or know of a way to resolve the issue?

Thanks

Andrew

1 - Restart in Safe Mode. This will perform a Disk Repair, clear cache files and only load Apple Software, extensions and fonts. The boot up will be slow and can take some time - Normal.

2 - Safe Mode will also eliminate Third Party Software, extensions and drivers from loading.

3 - It will only load the Minimum amount of Core Apple Processes to allow the the computer to function at a reduced Level of Performance

4 - Does the issue present in this mode ?

Booting with Shift depressed initially and quickly gets to the normal logon. At that stage the problem as described above remains present. Once password entered the Mac boots in safe mode - takes a while - and I get another logon screen. At that screen all Bluetooth keyboards and Mice work just fine... Entering the password again get to a desktop where all Bluetooth devices continue to work. So, booting in Safe mode does bypass the issue.

So, how do I identify the issue?

Thanks :-)

A - using which Keyboard and Mouse. Apple KB and Mouse OR Third Party ?

A - There are times when the Kernel Extensions do not load fast enough or at all until the Operating System is completely Loaded

A - This can sometime even happen with the Apple KB and Mouse unless they are cabled to computer

It was using the Apple Magic Keyboard connected via USB just to make sure Shift would be detected

Yes, but it used to work :-( before 13.5. I've also left it for several minutes at the logon prompt and the Logitech and Keychron devices still don't work.

It's annoying but I can live with it :-(. Maybe another update or Sonoma will fix it in the future...

Thanks
Andrew

Perhaps I was too nuanced and for that I apologize 😔

Is there any Third Party Software installed and used to control and make function the Third Party Keyboard and / or Mouse ?

As for another update to Ventura - at this stage in the Development of Ventura - maybe another update.

As for Beta Sonoma macOS 14 - Speculation and Guessing is Off Limits on these Forums

Even if I knew - the NDA ( Non Disclosure Agreement ) that Beta Testers and Developers agree to, prohibits revealing such information

OK. So I used Cmd + R and chose to Reinstall MacOS just now. When the reinstall was complete (abt 40mins) I tried again. I can report there is NO change to the symptoms. :-(. But as all the apps, data and configuration is intact I'm not sure how deep the MacOS reinstall was. i.e. IF the issue is a configuration one, it may not have changed the problem files. Or maybe this is just a MacOS 13.5 'feature'!

Thanks. The problem has the 'feeling' of support for third party devices not being enabled until a user is authenticated. Once authenticated drivers are loaded / enabled and all is good. Just speculation on my part...

If I can find another Bluetooth keyboard/mouse that isn't Apple I'll try those. As the issue impacts both the Logitech and Keychron devices I suspect it will impact other devices too.

If I make progress I'll update the thread.

Thanks again.

@Dialabrain, no I haven't and probably won't now as I don't feel the issue is related to those devices directly. It's a more general Bluetooth/configuration issue. The issue is now slightly worse than previous; not even the Apple Magic Keyboard works unless it's connected using USB at logon time. Interestingly, the Magic Mouse continues to be just fine tho.

I did upgrade my M2 MBP to 13.5 and that works just as it should with the Keychron keyboard and Logitech mouse at logon. My conclusion is that the issue is most likely a problem with the config of the iMac exacerbated with the install of 13.5. It's going to be a non-issue in the next few weeks as the iMac is getting replaced with a Studio after which it'll receive a fresh install of MacOS. I'm pretty confident that will eliminate the issue.

Thanks to you and P. Phillips for your help. Much appreciated :-).

I'm going to cease further investigations.
