I recently went out of town and while I was away the power went out. After that my external hard drive can’t be read and won’t show up on my desktop. It is showing up in Disk Utility as unmounted but it won’t allow me to mount it back. It has happened before but eventually was recovered so I am hoping the same will happen again but if anyone has any tips on how to fix it, my life is kind of on this hard drive.
This seems to be a recurring problem for me too. You dont need to panic, if you have a windows machine run first aid on it with that. It seems that Apple's disk utility is incapable of dealing with real life accidents where power supply to an important external disk is lost. It really is quite pathetic. windows can fix it, so why not apple?

The power outage may have killed the External Hard Disk. Please disconnect all external peripherals then restart in Safe Mode and then restart normally. Then connect the External Hard Disk in question and see if it can be found. If it cannot, open Disk Utility and see if it's seen then, if it is then download the free version of DriveDX and run it on the External Hard Disk. If any errors appear on the report that indicates the External Hard Disk has failed and must be replaced.
