I have an external hard drive which was used for Time Machine. Now I want to use the external hard drive for 'ordinary' storage - how do I wipe/reformat the device please? (Yes, I realise that I will loose all Time Machine backups).

Use disk utilities to erase Time Machine drive, this will allow you to do what you desire.
