Do I need to transfer the SIM card from my 8 plus to my 12 pro
I have a new 12 Pro & an existing 8 Plus. Do I need to transfer the SIM card from my old phone to the new one since my 12 has a SIM card?

That depends.
Did your carrier set up service on your new iPhone 12?
If not, and the SIM card on the iPhone 8 still holds your service plan and number, then yes you would need to transfer it to the new iPhone if you want to get service on the new iPhone, and are not planning on having your carrier transfer it or issue you a new sim card or eSim.
If you already have service on the new iPhone 12, either via a new ism card or eSim, then no, you don't need to transfer the SIM card.
