external hard drive

I have a LaCie portable hard drive - unused. When I connect it to either my Macbook or iMac it does not show in finder sidebar although I can see it when I look at disk utility . Have tried going to Finder preferences but toggling on/off for external hard drive makes no difference

Try erasing and reformatting the external drive with Disk Utility.
