Playback of video in iMessages too bright/washed out

My 7th generation iPad, running 16.5.1 started playing back my iMessage videos way too bright. (The same videos sent at the same time to my husband and his newer iPad play back normally.) Still pictures display normally. Interestingly, the still picture of the video clip is normal, as is the “tape” that runs along the bottom of the screen. All “settings” functions for Display and Brightness are set to auto/day mode/and about 75% brightness.

Suggestions on how to troubleshoot this and repair?

“On iPhone 12 models, iPhone 13 models, and iPhone 14 models, iPhone records video in Dolby Vision HDR for true-to-life color and contrast. To turn off HDR video recording, go to Settings > Camera > Record Video, then turn off HDR Video.”

cost me $800 to buy wife a new iPad because she didn’t want to ask daughter to send moves set up just for her! :-)

Did these videos come from one source, a few sources, many sources, or all sources? If it is just from one or a few, might the videos be recorded in HDR mode, which your husband's newer iPad can handle appropriately but yours cannot?

Thanks. My husband took videos with his iPhone 13 Pro. The only two options for video seem to be HD and 4K. We tried both versions and sent to my iPad, and got the same, washed out videos with both modes. I appreciate your idea, and it made sense to me. Do you further suggestions?

This worked for me, YMMV

Go to Settings

Accessibility

Display & Text Size

Reduce White Point

Setting it to 60%-ish seemed good.

I tried reducing Auto-Brightness,

it didn’t seem to do much but may work for you
